Wikipedia is Massive, Open, and Online; three of the four atributes. “Course” has yet to be successful defined in the online education.  Many Wikipedia topics are organized into subject matters similar to lesson plans. Some topics have linked video and audio commentary. For the self-directed learner Wikipedia pages are useful guides and following the references leads to deeper learning. Active learners may participate by editing the content. And there is minimal instructor-student interaction. Yet, learners may communicate with one another as they choose.  I think Wikipedia qualifies the first and most successful MOOC. Whether that is all there is to higher education is another issue.
